Civilitate is a personal interpretation of the charactères de civilités made by Robert Granjon in the 16th century. It started with what we considered as a medium weight. We, then, designed the hairline and the black weights.
Civilitate possess a set of uppercases based on the proportions, sizes and shapes of the original document. Even if it contains many differents choices imported into the digital world, this first set is quite faithful to the original. Then, a second set which is regularised compared to the previous set.
The majority of the lowercases possess an initial, a medial and a terminal form. This create a dynamic aspect to the overall text.
While starting to interpret this document and to create its digital version, we had to make some choices. Some of these were made to include a certain coherence between the shapes while others were purely aesthetic.
